First Time at the Theatre

Everything you need to know for a great first experience

Before You Go

Getting Tickets

  • Book in advance for popular shows, especially Broadway touring productions
  • Check for discounts - many theatres offer student, senior, military, and industry rates
  • Consider weeknight performances for better seat availability and sometimes lower prices
  • Look for rush tickets - some venues sell discounted same-day tickets

What to Wear

DFW theatre dress codes range from casual to dressy depending on the venue:

  • Broadway touring shows (Music Hall, Bass Hall): Smart casual to dressy. Many people dress up, but nice jeans are fine.
  • Regional theatres (DTC, WaterTower, Stage West): Casual to smart casual. Come as you are.
  • Outdoor venues: Dress for the weather, bring layers

Pro tip: Theatres are often cold! Bring a light jacket or sweater.

At the Theatre

Arrival

  • Arrive 30 minutes early for your first visit to find parking and your seats
  • Check parking options - most venues have nearby lots or garages
  • Pick up your tickets at will-call if needed (have ID ready)

During the Show

  • Silence your phone completely - not just vibrate, fully silent
  • No phones, photos, or recording during the performance
  • Stay seated until intermission unless it's an emergency
  • Unwrap cough drops beforehand - rustling is very audible
  • Save your applause for the end of songs and scenes

Intermission

Most shows have a 15-20 minute intermission. Use this time to:

  • Get refreshments at the bar or concession
  • Stretch your legs in the lobby
